Boutiques

Boutiques have sprung up in all the major cities in India and they all seem to do a roaring business. Some boutiques cater for the tourists and are housed in star hotels. They sell all sorts of clothing-dresses, pant-suits, jackets, etc., - made of silk fabrics.

Most clothing is made according to contemporary Western fashions with costume jewelry to match. In these boutiques you can buy dresses which are copies of designs from Paris or London. Whether you buy a mini-dress or a maxi-gown made from heavy brocade or velvet, trimmed with lace or oriental embroidery, there is always a touch of magnificence about it.

Of course boutiques are not meant for tourists alone. Some of the newly rich business class in the cities can also afford to pay the high prices charged by these boutiques.

Several young designers in India have tried to exploit the variety of Indian costumes and create new fashions. These clothes are meant for young people who have a little less money to spend. The clothes are made of handloom fabrics with bold prints or tie-and-dye designs. Young people everywhere -in India and outside- are very fashion-consious today. The accent everywhere is on clothes that look different and individual. It is these young people buy the latest clothes in fashion.
